CR-78: Another Computer Music Editor's Choice and 10 out of 10!

"Brimming with nostalgia and contemporary potential in equal measure."

Cherry Audio has received its eleventh 10/10 rating from Computer Music, this time for the CR-78 drum machine virtual instrument. It was also awarded the Editor's Choice in the August 2024 issue, on newsstands now. Reviewer Roland Schmidt praised its looks ("stunningly beautiful") and its flexibility ("versatile and programmable, at both pattern and timbre level").

Cherry Audio's CR-78 virtual drum machine accurately recreates the punchy analog sounds and 34 onboard preset rhythms of the first true classic drum machine and takes it much further. Unlike sample-based emulations, CR-78 uses modeled synthesis to recreate the classic tones of the original and makes a quantum leap forward by making these sounds fully editable.

"One of the Cherry design outlooks that we always applaud is its approach to re-imagining the classics of yesteryear with extraordinary reverence to the original, while forging a forward-looking path. The CR-78 is nothing short of a prime example of this. All of the original sounds and rhythms are perfectly on hand, but they have ignited rocket boosters with its programmability, at both the rhythm and timbre level."

This rating follows Computer Music's 10/10 reviews of GX-80 -- hailed as "the most impressive visual and sonic spectacle available in software" -- in December, 2022, and the 10 out of 10 ratings for free Synthesizer Expander Module (June 2024), Pro Soloist (May 2024), PS-3300 (March 2024), Harmonia (January 2024), Octave Cat (November 2023), Mercury-6 (May 2023), Elka-X (November 2022), Sines (December 2022), and Miniverse (September 2022).
